Optional in Java
Optional<T> is a container object that may or may not contain a value. It was introduced in Java 8 to make missing values explicit and reduce accidental NullPointerException errors.
Instead of returning null, a method can return an Optional.
Optional<String> name = Optional.of("Saurabh");Optional<String> emptyName = Optional.empty();An Optional makes the caller handle the possibility that the value is missing.
Why Optional?
Without Optional, code often needs repeated null checks.

Optional.of()
Use of() when the value is definitely not null.
Optional<String> language = Optional.of("Java");If the value is null, Optional.of() throws NullPointerException.
Optional.ofNullable()
Use ofNullable() when the value might be null.
String value = getNameFromDatabase();Optional<String> name = Optional.ofNullable(value);If value is null, the result becomes Optional.empty().
Optional.empty()
Use empty() when no value exists.

if (name.isPresent()) { System.out.println(name.get());}This works, but using isPresent() with get() can feel like a normal null check. Prefer methods like ifPresent(), map(), and orElse() when possible.
ifPresent()
Run code only when a value exists.
Optional<String> email = Optional.of("user@example.com");
email.ifPresent(value -> System.out.println("Email: " + value));If the optional is empty, nothing runs.
orElse() and orElseGet()
Use orElse() to provide a default value.
Optional<String> city = Optional.empty();
String result = city.orElse("Unknown");System.out.println(result); // UnknownUse orElseGet() when creating the default value is expensive.

orElse()evaluates the default value immediately.orElseGet()calls the supplier only when the optional is empty.
orElseThrow()
Use orElseThrow() when a missing value should be treated as an error.

User result = user.orElseThrow(() -> new IllegalArgumentException("User not found"));This keeps the error handling clear at the call site.
map()
Use map() to transform the value when it exists.
Optional<String> name = Optional.of("amit");
Optional<String> upperName = name.map(String::toUpperCase);
System.out.println(upperName.orElse("Guest")); // AMITIf the optional is empty, map() simply returns another empty optional.
filter()
Use filter() to keep the value only if it matches a condition.
Optional<Integer> marks = Optional.of(82);
String result = marks .filter(score -> score >= 75) .map(score -> "Passed with distinction") .orElse("Needs improvement");
System.out.println(result);flatMap()
Use flatMap() when the transformation already returns an Optional.
Optional<User> user = findUserById(10);
Optional<String> email = user.flatMap(User::getEmail);If getEmail() returns Optional<String>, then flatMap() avoids creating Optional<Optional<String>>.

When to Use Optional
Good use cases:
- Method return values that may be missing
- Search or lookup methods
- Optional configuration values
- Stream operations that may not find a result
Avoid using Optional for:
- Class fields in simple data models
- Method parameters
- Collections, because an empty list is usually better than
Optional<List<T>> - Performance-critical inner loops
Optional with Streams
Some stream terminal operations return Optional.
List<Integer> numbers = List.of(4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42);
Optional<Integer> firstLargeNumber = numbers.stream() .filter(n -> n > 20) .findFirst();
System.out.println(firstLargeNumber.orElse(0)); // 23Methods like findFirst(), findAny(), max(), and min() use Optional because the stream might be empty.
Best Practices
- Return
Optionalfrom methods when a result may be missing. - Prefer
orElse(),orElseGet(),orElseThrow(),map(), andifPresent()over directget(). - Do not use
Optional.get()unless you are certain a value exists. - Avoid returning
